'Alarming' rise in Queensland tree clearing as 400,000 hectares stripped

Queensland underwent a dramatic surge in tree clearing – with the heaviest losses in Nice Barrier Reef catchments – within the 12 months main as much as the Palaszczuk authorities’s thwarted bid to revive protections.

Figures launched on Thursday confirmed a 33% rise in clearing to nearly 400,000 hectares in 2015-16, which means Queensland now has two-thirds the annual charge of deforestation within the Brazilian Amazon.
