The Far-Proper Marketing campaign to Destroy Our Nationwide Monuments

Trump’s assault on the 2 nationwide monuments, in spite of everything, wasn’t only a fortunate break, a present that fell from the sky. Somewhat, it was the results of a savvy, multiyear marketing campaign by a community of far-right organizations with highly effective associates in Washington and monetary backing from dark-money funds tied to the billionaire Koch brothers and their political kin.

Led by organizations like Utah’s Sutherland Institute, the American Legislative Change Council (ALEC), the Heritage Basis, and an array of allies, this community has labored assiduously over the previous few years to undermine the legitimacy of federal lands throughout the American West. It has executed this, partly, by working to erode public assist for key conservation legal guidelines and establishments, together with the Antiquities Act of 1906. And it has had nice success.

Trump’s journey to Utah, his determination to destroy the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase–Escalante monuments, is a consequence of that deeper, long-game marketing campaign to chip away at America’s conservation system.
