This sett I’ve identified for 50 years. I feel it was first occupied within the early 1950s. Big now, 200 metres lengthy and 60 vast, with innumerable entrances hid amongst dense rhododendron thickets, I known as it Badgeropolis, and spent a lot time watching from the hillside above because the badgers made their moonlit excursions. These had been an enchantment: the silvery bounce of their lovely coats; the rough-and-tumble of cubs’ play; their curiosity and habituation to my nonetheless, nightly presence; the astonishing inflected vocabulary of squeal, purr, yelp and mew; their tenderness at mating; the love between boar and sow, dad and mom and cubs.
