Rockland St Mary, Norfolk The fisherman rewarded the well-fed and fearless heron – an everyday on the angling spot – with a small perch
There have been two catchers of fish on the water’s edge. There was the previous boy who advised me he had been coming right here for 50 years after which there was the gray heron that has acquired a deep familiarity with individuals. I typically it see as I drive by the neighbouring village of Bramerton, the place it stands by the pond proper on the roadside.
As we speak, it was on Rockland staithe, the place it saved a companionable distance from its human neighbour. Each confronted in the direction of the tide-swollen water and, whereas each have been fish-focused, just one was doing the catching. He advised me that the heron had been an everyday on the spot for about 10 years and, over that point, had acquired the braveness to tempo inside touching distance of his pitch. On winter mornings, when the bottom is frozen and pickings are slim, the chicken stands on an adjoining telegraph pole and croaks his disapproval. Apparently, the fishermen have taken this as an indication of its starvation they usually toss it components of their undesirable catch.
